Pro-Palestinian protest demands action, Hillel opposes on The Daily Campus

SJP student organizers said actions in support of Palestine include calling local politicians, looking into the Boycott Divestment Sanctions movement and demanding university divestment from companies that fund weapon manufacturers. 

Layan Alnajjar, a fifth-semester marketing major, was one of the students who vocalized her beliefs, and during her speech, she encouraged people and institutions to stop funding corporations that make weapons that aid in the destruction of Palesteninan people… “I spoke today because I just feel that no one at UConn knows what’s going on. No one knows how UConn is taking their tuition and funding it toward genocide,” Alnajjar said in an interview after the event.

Upon communications with friends in Gaza, Yasmin learned that doctors were shocked by the injuries because they noticed that Israel used a new type of ammunition that melts skin and bones. Israeli practices of maiming indigenous Palestinians demonstrate systematic oppression, which deems the Palestinian body valueless as it is always the target within an ongoing Israeli ethnic cleansing, genocide, and apartheid, processes noted by Pappé (2014). Article 1 of the Fourth Geneva Convention states: “The High Contracting Parties undertake to respect and to ensure respect for the present Convention in all circumstances.” In addition to Canada not abiding by this article, it is directly empowering Israel’s violations of international and humanitarian law.
Please don’t reward Canada for supporting and enabling Israel’s ethnic cleansingwar crimesapartheid and genocide. I call on you in the name of my father, who died without being able to return to live in his beloved homeland, to not support Canada’s bid for a UNSC seat.
