Earlier this month, the Israeli army confirmed its plans to occupy Gaza City, with the invasion reportedly set to start on October 7. But on the ground, the invasion has already started.

On August 10, the Israeli army began invading the eastern parts of Gaza City, with Israeli ground forces moving into one of the city’s largest neighborhoods, al-Zaytoun. The neighborhood borders the Netzarim corridor to the south.

… Based on the pace of the carpet-bombing, locals in Gaza are now speculating that October 7 would not be the date Israel’s occupation of the city began, but the deadline for when Gaza City would be completely erased.

GAZA CITY—I woke up at 3 a.m. on March 18th to the sound of a massive explosion above my head, shattering the silence of the night. For a moment, I felt like I had died.

… Suddenly, the screams of my five children pierced my ears. I couldn’t tell whether we were alive or dead and buried under the rubble. I rushed to hold them.

… “Mama! Are we going to die?” my terrified 12-year-old daughter, Saida, asked me, her body trembling with fear.

… As we fled, my husband said, “When I heard our children screaming, I felt helpless. I only thought about getting them out alive, but I brought them out to what? To a life where we run from one death to another?”

… The airstrikes last night killed more than 400 Palestinians, including 174 children, 89 women, and 32 elderly people.

A year ago, Israel buried me alive. I’m still clawing my way out by Mohammed R Mhawish

  1. What happened was like nothing I had ever heard — a tearing, howling explosion that collapsed everything in milliseconds. I didn’t see the ceiling crack or the walls crumble. I only felt the sudden, crushing weight as the world above came down. It wasn’t like falling, but like being smothered into the earth. My body folded awkwardly beneath the debris — arms pinned, legs trapped, ribs crushing against sharp edges.
  2. I tried to scream, but the noise came out as a rasp, a pathetic, choking gasp swallowed by the dark. My chest burned from the effort, but I screamed again anyway — calling out for my wife, my three-year-old son, my parents. Their names ricocheted inside my skull as both the layers of cement and silence pressed in harder.
