The Yale College Council, the university’s undergraduate student government, voted on Sunday to adopt a statement of condemnation against Israel. Originally authored by a student group called Yalies 4 Palestine, the statement denounces the “injustice, genocide, and ethnic cleansing occuring in Palestine.”

We envision a Judaism that is inherently anti-racist and anti-Zionist, and we reject the conflation of Zionism with Judaism that labels anti-Zionism as anti-Semitic. We will not allow our Jewishness and our history of struggle to be weaponized in order to commit pogroms, ethnic cleansing, and genocide. Instead, we offer the concept of doikayt, a Yiddish socialist idea meaning “hereness.” We must fight for our right to thrive right here where we are–a Jewish life that does not legitimize the displacement and ethnic cleansing of any other group in the name of our own “security.” We believe the most secure future for the Jewish people is not through any settler colonial project, but through solidarity with other oppressed groups, fighting to abolish racism and transform our world.

But let’s get back to the Al Jazeera report. If the information presented is accurate, Myanmar most likely is guilty of genocide. But suppose, just suppose, the same reporter had gone to the same academics at the same universities and, rather than querying them on Myanmar, had instead solicited their views on Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians and whether or not that constitutes genocide. What do you suppose their responses would have been? Or would there have been any response at all?
… “Genocide is self defense.” The words, of course, have a distinctly Orwellian ring to them. But this is what it has come down to. This is now the only acceptable position one may take in US academic discourse on the Palestine-Israel conflict, the only one that won’t jeopardize your career.
