UN Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, International Criminal Court Prosecutor, International Court of Justice President: Investigate the Possibility that Israel is Committing the Crime of Genocide Against the Indigenous Palestinian People.
Activists from Workers World Party, Democratic Socialists of America and Food Not Bombs gathered in Buffalo, New York, Aug. 24, in solidarity with Palestine against Israeli occupation and terrorism… Demonstrators chanted “Palestine is on our side, Zionism is genocide!” and “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” Speakers drew connections between institutional racism, by the carceral system at home, and the genocide of Palestinians, and they called on the U.S. to cease arming and funding the Israeli settler-colonial regime and to stop sending its police, a terroristic occupying force, to Israel for training.
Understanding that both the U.S. and Israel are white-supremacist, settler-colonial projects, whose founding were predicated on genocide and stealing land, explains why both rely on exploitation, violence, subjugation and mass incarceration to keep their project going. Gaza is the world’s largest open-air prison.
Those of us living inside the U.S. witness and experience every day the horrific impact of an economic and social system built on settler-colonial genocide against Indigenous peoples and theft of their lands as well as enslavement and forced labor of African peoples. The same vile system is at work this very minute against the Palestinian people.
The march gathered at a park near downtown, where solidarity statements were read by representatives of Black Workers for Justice, the Duke University chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine, Workers World Party and the Green Party. A statement prepared by march organizers and read prior to the start of the march asserted:
“We stand in solidarity with the #BlackLivesMatter Uprising. We want an end to occupation, racist violence and displacement, at home and abroad. …
“The United States spends billions of dollars funding Israeli occupation and the genocide of Palestinians while denying Black and Brown communities basic access to wages, health care and adequate housing…”
“We don’t know how long this attack is going to go. How long it could possibly go. We know with pain the comparisons to the Warsaw ghetto. We know what the Nazis did to the Warsaw ghetto. And everyone here who has seen any of the videos of the attacks on schools, the attacks on a playground, kids on swings, 4 young boys playing soccer on a beach. These aren’t military targets. But maybe the worst target was the bombing of the power station. Gaza’s flat and sandy and when you knock out the power, then the ability of even pumping water for sanitation, for sewage. That is beyond criminal. That is genocide.”
