Netanyahu again commended Trump for standing up for Israel during the U.N. General Assembly meeting last week, when the Trump administration announced it would cut all funding to the U.N. Relief and Works Agency in Palestine. The agency helps fund schools and clinics in the West Bank and Gaza – as well as Jordan, Syria and Lebanon – for more than 5 million Palestinian refugees.

For too long the Palestinian leadership did not bring charges of war crimes, crimes against humanity and charges of genocide against the Israeli state for fear of losing the US contribution to the UNRWA programmes. They also delayed applying for full member status to the UN for the same reason.

UNRWA cuts doom Gazan residents to uncertain future by Isra Namey

Ziad Al Sarafandi, a member of the refugees’ department in the Gaza Strip, told Gulf News that Washington’s efforts to weaken UNRWA by imposing serious cuts to its budget are meant to make a decision on one of the major Palestinian issues — refugees.

“The US administration, the Israeli occupation regime’s biggest ally, falsely claims the international organisation is inflating the numbers of Palestinian refugees by conferring refugee status on descendants of more than 750,000 Palestinians who fled their ancestral villages in 1948 as a result of the genocide perpetrated against them by the Zionists,” he said.

In the summer of 2012, UNICEF and UNRWA asked if Gaza will be liveable by 2020. At the time- five years into Israel’s siege, and post Israel’s 2008 and 2012 carpet-bombing campaigns- one might have been led to think that if the situation only had eight more stable years to go until apocalypse, then it probably doesn’t look too good already. What one might have missed is that Gaza in 2020, as in 2017, as in 2012, is what genocide looks like.

UN predictions fall short: Gaza uninhabitable today by Eva Bartlett

Power outages, 95 percent undrinkable water, constant fuel and cooking gas shortages, sewage and sanitation crises, a shattered economy (unemployment at 45 percent) and manufactured poverty rendering 80 percent of the population dependent on inadequate and dignity-shattering food aid hand-outs (no vegetables or fruit, high carb, almost no protein); food insecurity (72 percent insecure or vulnerable to food insecurity), stunting (31.4 percent) and anemia (72.8 percent) among children. This is Gaza, and with each passing month, even each day, life is less and less tolerable. In August, 2012, UNRWA questioned if by 2020 Gaza would be a livable place. We don’t have to wait till 2020 for Gaza to be declared unlivable: it already is unlivable by any standards.
