UN Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide and the International Criminal Court Prosecutor: Investigate the Possibility that Israel is Committing the Crime of Genocide Against the Palestinian People
As the world watches Israel losing all sense of humanity and breaking all international norms of behaviour, it is the UN to which it looks for intervention. After the UN World Summit of 2005 the international community asserted the principle of the Right to Protect as part of humanitarian intervention. The primary responsibility for enforcing this rests with the UN and its SG. I call on you to immediately exercise this responsibility to prevent a genocide of the Palestinians in Gaza.
… My country has always been one of the prime supporters of the UN in its peace and security functions. My Party has justice and human dignity as underlying principles. We cannot now allow the UN to lose all credibility because one powerful state is allowing Israel to conduct aggression against Gaza with impunity. We have a right to demand that you as the SG enforce the UN Charter and play an active role in halting Israeli military aggression against the Palestinian population of Gaza. As SG you must also demand and ensure Egypt open its border with Gaza to allow medical assistance and essential supplies to go into Gaza. You have a duty to ensure that the plan of genocide of the Palestinians by the Israeli state is thwarted. It is time for you as the UNSG to fulfill this critical duty.”
Not to be mistaken with the Russell Tribunal, The Brussels Tribunal wrote the following letter to the UN Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide:
20 July, 2014
To UN Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide
We are witnessing genocide in Gaza, Iraq, Syria, we are witnessing the use of illegal weapons, the bombings of hospitals, schools, a home for the disabled, the trauma of children, ethnic cleansing on a massive scale. We have heard the statements re Gaza of a desire that mothers are killed so no more children will be born. WHY are you silent? The UN has lost all credibility. Ban’s “concern” and “regret” are weasel words, pathetic – but you, “Office of the Special Advisor on the Prevention of Genocide” leave one speechless at your silence. Shame on you.
President Nicolas Maduro has maintained the foreign policy of his firebrand predecessor Hugo Chavez, who was popular in the Arab world and broke relations with Israel after accusing it of “holocaust” for its 2009 offensive in Gaza. Israel’s latest attacks have “initiated a higher phase of its policy of genocide and extermination with the ground invasion of Palestinian territory, killing innocent men, women, girls and boys,” a Venezuelan government statement said…
Venezuela called for the United Nations‘ human rights body to meet and condemn Israel. “Venezuela also rejects the cynical campaigns trying to condemn both parties equally, when it is clear you cannot morally compare occupied and massacred Palestine with the occupying state, Israel, which also possesses military superiority and acts on the margins of international law.”
The Grand Imam of Egypt’s Al-Azhar, the highest seat of learning in the Muslim world, denounced an ongoing Israeli onslaught in the Gaza Strip as an “act of genocide against the armless Palestinian people”.
In a Saturday statement, Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb condemned Israel’s “heinous crimes” in the Gaza Strip and urged the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation as well as the United Nations to “immediately act to stop this aggression.”
CAIRO: The Secretary-General of Egypt’s state-run rights watchdog National Council for Human Rights (NCHR) ambassador Mokhles Kotb demanded the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights’ (UNHCHR) immediate intervention to halt human rights violations against Palestinian people, Abdul Ghaffar Shukr, vice president of NCHR told Youm7 Wednesday.
Shukr further warned that Gaza is now facing a “genocidal war,” adding that “the council is about to issue a press statement condemning the attacks on Gaza which were officially initiated by the Israeli military.” Shukr called on the Egyptian government to counter this vicious attack on unarmed civilians in the Gaza Strip.
“Today, colonialism, including settler colonialism, is absolutely prohibited. Colonialism, however, was not expressly prohibited by international law at the time Israel was established. The normative shift began only in the 1950s as result of anti-colonial liberation movements, and colonialism became expressly prohibited in 1960, when the UN adopted the Declaration on Granting Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples. Since the prohibition does not apply retroactively, earlier colonial processes in which settler colonial societies had established themselves as nation-states were de facto immunized and normalized by UN-led ecolonization. As a result, the dominant legal opinion is that the legal framework of colonialism is not applicable within the borders of existing states, even where founded through aggression, colonization, ethnic cleansing or genocide, such as the United States, Australia and Israel.”
