Today we are commemorating the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People at a time when Israel’s contempt for international law and humanitarian law has exceeded all possible bounds, trampling on every international resolution, charter and rule. It has set little store by international public opinion in perpetrating massacres and atrocities against Palestinian civilians in its most recent attack on Gaza. These crimes are classified as war crimes and genocide, with 2,000 victims, 95 per cent of whom were women, children and elderly people. Ninety-one families have disappeared; 59 residential buildings, 145 public schools and 75 community schools have been destroyed — such schools being refuges for those who have had to flee their homes.

Egypt’s Al-Azhar condemns Israel’s ‘genocide’ in Gaza

The Grand Imam of Egypt’s Al-Azhar, the highest seat of learning in the Muslim world, denounced an ongoing Israeli onslaught in the Gaza Strip as an “act of genocide against the armless Palestinian people”.

In a Saturday statement, Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb condemned Israel’s “heinous crimes” in the Gaza Strip and urged the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation as well as the United Nations to “immediately act to stop this aggression.”
