Though not using the word ‘genocide’, Tantura massacre survivors and descendants describe Zionist militia crimes, framed by the collective Palestinian experience of the Nakba.

“Apart from Tantura’s former prosperity, the most striking thing my father remembered was seeing people being killed before his eyes, and how they spent the first days after the Nakba in hardship and poverty, without shelter.”
… “Our parents carefully told us about what happened, how my uncle and grandfather were martyrs,” Masri said. “How they forced people to dig their graves. How they put dozens of people in mass graves. My grandfather on my mother’s side said that the number of dead reached 150 and that he buried them. He said that not only is the parking lot over graves but there are several more mass graves.

And the Nazi-associations? They come from actual perpetrators and other Israelis. Shlomo Ambar, one of the perpetrators of the Tantura massacre, compared his own unit to Nazi soldiers… Such massacres seemed to invoke very real Nazi-comparisons in Israeli ministers, no less. Referring probably to the Dawaymeh massacre of October 29, Agriculture Minister Aharon Zisling told the Israeli parliament on November 17th that “Jews too have behaved like Nazis and my entire being has been shaken.”
… But now the Israel apologists are trying to claim that all this is just outrageous, it didn’t happen, it smacks of blood libels. Yet even if it is just one person’s memory, this memory joins up with the myriad others who have the same account — from both victims and perpetrators. It paints an undeniable picture of a barbaric ethnic cleansing.

From Tantura to Naqab: Israel’s long hidden truths are finally revealed by Ramzy Baroud

Amnesty’s 280 pages of damning evidence of Israel’s racism and apartheid did not shy away from connecting Israel’s violent present with its equally bloody past. It did not borrow from Israel’s deceptive language and self-serving division of Palestinians into disconnected communities, each with a different claim and a different status. For Amnesty, as was the case with Human Rights Watch’s report in April 2021, Israeli injustices against the Palestinians must be recognised and duly condemned in their entirety.

“Since its establishment in 1948, Israel has pursued an explicit policy of establishing and maintaining a Jewish demographic hegemony… while minimising the number of Palestinians and restricting their rights,” the report stated. This could only happen through mass killing, ethnic cleansing and genocide, from Tantura to the Naqab, to the Moroccan Quarters, to Gaza and Sheikh Jarrah.

How to get away with genocide: legal issues arising from the Tantura massacre by Alya Zoabi

According to international criminal law a war crime is defined as a violation of the laws of war including intentionally killing prisoners of war, torture, take hostages, unnecessarily destroying civilians’ property, deception, rape, pillaging, committing genocide or ethnic cleansing. If you are still unaware that the Israeli military committed all of the above during and after the Nakba, continuing to today, then I’m not sure you’re watching the right channel or reading the right newspaper.

Israel and Genocide by Richard Silverstein

We must call it what it is, no matter how much of a taboo there may currently be. The Holocaust, horrific as it was, does not absolve Israel of responsibilty for its crimes against the Palestinian people. Nor does suffering such a heinous tragedy mean that Israel is incapable of wreaking a similar tragedy on another people. Israelis may resist such terms and be enraged at being associated with them, but the same opprobrium earlier met the use of terms like apartheid and war crimes. For decades, Israel argued that they were inappropriate, prejudicial and even blood libel. But eventually, they became accepted and normalized as references to Israel and its campaign of Palestinian oppression. The same process will follow with the term genocide.
