There is an implicit parity, you see? All fear is the same, all violence is the same, all insecurity is the same. The Oglala Sioux father tells the writer how he was able to see white humanity for the first time through this friendship. The white man tells him the same about Indigenous humanity.

And just like that, the genocidal engine of American colonialism, which, together with slavery, propelled its entire economy, becomes just a big misunderstanding, a problem to be solved by dialogue, empathy, and the simple understanding that, as McCann quotes his Palestinian protagonist’s epiphany: “They have families, too.”

Substitute Palestinian for Oglala Lakota, Palestine for Pine Ridge Reservation, and Israelis for white settlers (although that does not need changing), and you have, in a nutshell, Colum McCann’s much-touted, highly anticipated novel, which may well become a blockbuster film.

222. All Defendants herein had to know the type of heinous criminal activity being engaged in by armed and aggressive settlers and IDF/G4S personnel in the OPT, for any number of reasons. As early as 1990, ethnic cleansing, wanton property destruction, heavy civilian casualties, incarceration, and torture of political prisoners as well as children, were all common knowledge in Israel. Haaretz articles and editorials repeatedly reported on and criticized these criminal activities and settlement expansion. That activity, i.e., ill treatment and violent subjugation of a civilian population, of course, constitutes classic war crimes under the Nuremberg Principles and the U.S. War Crimes Statute. It also violates the UN Genocide Convention.

Israel: In the death throes of a racist dream by Susan Abulhawa

Army chief of staff, Raphael Eitan put it most honestly when he said: “When we have settled all the land, all the [Palestinian] Arabs will be able to do about it will be to scurry around like drugged cockroaches in a bottle.”

Again, faced with the same mistake, Israel simply escalated its brutality. “We have to kill and kill and kill, all day, every day,” explained an Israeli professor; and a prominent Israeli lawmaker raised this call to genocide to include the murder of Palestinian mothers and their babies, whom she called “little snakes”…

The new escalation to eradicate Palestine now is to enlist the civilian population of Israel to arm itself and join their military thugs against our unarmed civilian population. Videos and news of recent random executions, stabbings, and the roaming bloodlust of mob vigilantes abound on the Internet.

And yet.

We remain.

Brand Israel pretends the burning of a Palestinian baby is the act of extremists by Susan Abulhawa

Israel is a nation that has on its state payroll rabbis who provide religious authority sanctioning the killing of gentiles, including infants. Its justice minister has called for the genocide of Palestinians, including babies, whom she referred to as “little snakes.” The Deputy Speaker of its parliament laid out a multi-phase extermination plan for Gaza. These ethos are not on the fringes of society. They represent a supremacist majority culture of impunity that sees Palestinian life not only as lacking value, but as a menace.

While reading one of the many articles on the Israeli genocide in Gaza, I scrolled down to the comment section out of habit. I noticed one commenter suggest the book, Mornings in Jenin by Susan Abulhawa, so I took a screenshot as a reminder to download it on my kindle. Little did I know that I was just introduced to what would become one of my favorite books of all time.
