The Israeli military is arming gangs to combat Hamas in Gaza, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed on Thursday. The revelation comes to light after right-wing Israeli lawmaker Avigdor Lieberman accused Netanyahu on Israeli public broadcaster Kan yesterday of arming a gang of hundreds of men in Rafah as a counterweight to Hamas influence in the Strip. The Prime Minister’s office responded by saying that it was combating the Palestinian resistance group “in various ways, on the recommendation of all heads of the security establishment.”

Later, Netanyahu officially confirmed the reports in a video posted on X. “On the advice of security officials, we activated clans in Gaza that oppose Hamas,” the Israeli Prime Minister said. “What’s wrong with that? It only saves the lives of Israeli soldiers.”

… Mondoweiss spoke to several members of the Arrow Unit, in addition to a high-level security source in the resistance, who detailed Hamas’s continuing efforts to combat Israel’s armed proxy groups in the Strip. Mondoweiss also spoke to the heads of several clans in Gaza regarding Israel’s attempts to exploit the security vacuum it created by backing clan leaders as an alternative to Hamas rule.

… At the time, members of the Arrow Unit told Mondoweiss that they would prevent these families from arming themselves, as they would then be co-opted by Israel in service of its genocidal goals.

Israel is creating a power vacuum in Gaza by backing armed looters — and killing anyone who tries to stop them by Faris Giacaman and Tareq S. Hajjaj

Israel has been waging a war on Gaza’s ability to govern itself and maintain law and order as a part of its 18-month-long genocidal campaign. The broad objective of this strategy has been to create a civil and humanitarian vacuum in Gaza that would lead to chaos and lawlessness…

… To make sure this administrative vacuum is maintained, Israel has launched periodic assassination campaigns targeting members of Gaza’s civil government — the police force, the security forces, the Civil Defense, and the healthcare system.

Israel has instrumentalized the fact that all these civil branches of government in Gaza, by definition, fall under Hamas control, given that it is the ruling faction in the strip. Consequently, it labels any Gaza civil servant as a “Hamas operative,” an association that has allowed Israel to legitimize the targeting of an entire category of civilian workers. They have included firefighters, medics, nurses, doctors, first responders, police officers, and other civil servants who were killed in the line of duty.

But none of these strategies of targeting civil government personnel are new. Israel has deliberately targeted leaders and low-level civil servants over the past 18 months, especially the police force and security units assigned to protect aid convoys from looting.

  • Israel, as the occupying power, has the obligation to ensure the provision of food and medical care to the population commensurate with their needs, and if it is unable to do so, it must at the very least facilitate the work of humanitarian organizations to deliver that assistance and the access of the population to it in a safe and dignified manner. Israel must also ensure entry of humanitarian aid and all other goods necessary for the survival of the civilian population at the required scale, facilitate the rebuilding of civilian infrastructure and ensure the safety of convoys, routes, warehouses, distribution sites, aid seekers and those securing and delivering aid.

Promising to return once a month, the group “Mothers on the March,” who have actively engaged for the past decade through weekly vigils in protesting police killings and brutality of Black and Brown people by police, held their first demonstration February 24 outside of the Israeli Consulate, calling attention to the injustice for killings of Palestinians in Israel and the illegally occupied territories along with freeing Gaza from its ongoing confinement… The small group marched and chanted while holding signs with messages demanding justice for Palestine and calling for an end to the ongoing “genocide” of the Palestinian people and the Israeli plan to expand settlements in the occupied territories.
