Letters to Editor: Debating the Terms “Arab World” and “Arab Country” on Washington Report on Middle East Affairs

Ida Audeh’s response: Gregory DeSylva seems to equate Jewish nationalism/Zionism with references to the Arab world (and use of the term “Arab country”). There is no basis for comparing the two. The former is a discredited supremacist 19th century ideology forged in another continent that can only be maintained through repeated acts of genocide and erasure, as Israel’s 75-year history demonstrates; the latter acknowledges an obvious reality, that Palestinians are part of a region. Because we are indigenous to the region, we have connections to other people in the region; we share history, culture and Arabic as a first language. Historic Palestine is located in the Arab world, a geography that Israelis often refer to as “a dangerous neighborhood,” in the way that colonizers tend to belittle the geographies they descend on. With predatory aspirations, their disdain for their surroundings is a clear indicator that they are alien to it.

Oppressive pines: Uprooting Israeli green colonialism and implanting Palestinian A’wna by Ghada Sasa

This article provides a comprehensive overview of Israeli green colonialism, denoting the apartheid state’s misappropriation of environmentalism to eliminate the Indigenous people of Palestine and usurp its resources. I focus on the violence of ‘protected areas’, encompassing national parks, forests, and nature reserves. This article argues that Israel primarily establishes them to (1) justify land grab; (2) prevent the return of Palestinian refugees; (3) dehistoricise, Judaise, and Europeanise Palestine, erasing Palestinian identity and suppressing resistance to Israeli oppression; and (4) greenwash its apartheid image… Israel’s genocidal aims are advanced by its dehistoricisation of Palestine – utilising protected areas – manifesting in the erosion of Palestinian identity and resistance to Israeli oppression (Abu-Sitta, 2011Gandolfo, 2017: 196)…

Taking on the “charities” that fund Israel’s settlers by Sami Huraini

We are fighting against efforts to eliminate us.

Deep down, every Palestinian knows it’s not solely about the “occupation.”

Every day, Palestinians face the threat of being arrested and imprisoned indefinitely, killed or displaced from our land. Our experience tells us that our existence is a threat to Israel.

The only “solution” to this danger is to get rid of us.

During June, one of the young men from our community of al-Tuwani raised a Palestinian flag from a tree in our village. Days later, Israeli military forces launched a violent raid to take the flag down.

Israeli soldiers pointed their guns at me, my friends and my family members. Effectively granted immunity from prosecution by their state, they pointed death in our faces.

It can feel like only luck separates the living from the dead in those moments. After all, the sole purpose of the Israeli soldier is to eliminate the native people – by taking our freedom or our lives, through expulsion or forced integration into the settler-colonial system.

…Erasure comes in many forms.

Whatever you can do to survive and stay on this land, despite all odds and despite the fact that the US and the western powers ore equally in bed with Zionism and with its genocidal intents for the Palestinians.

It’s not a conflict; it’s state-sanctioned genocide against Palestine on El Tecolote

In the coverage of Israel’s attacks on Palestinians in Sheik Jarrah, in the Al-Aqsa Mosque, in occupied Jerusalem, and since the establishment of the Israeli state, major U.S. media outlets have continuously framed Israeli state-sanctioned genocide against Palestinians as the “Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”… “Israeli-Palestinian Hostilities” from the New York Times. “Surge in Israeli-Palestinian conflict prompts concern…” writes The Boston Globe. “Israeli-Palestinian Violence” declares NPR, all coining the violence Palestinians are experiencing as mutual. This framing of Israel and Palestine in a “conflict” or “crisis” validates the violent genocidal settler-colonialism enacted by the nation-state of Israel and its military through the demonization of Palestine as a complicit aggressor, assuming that they are operating on equal terms. Israel is an internationally funded nation-state, occupying Palestine’s unceded West Bank and Gaza, settling Palestinian land, and forcing native Palestinians out.

Sheikh Jarrah: Western media outlets are whitewashing Israeli colonialism by Denijal Jegic

The terms “Jews” and “Israelis” as well as “Palestinians” and “Arabs” are used as interchangeable synonyms. As a consequence, the colonial dimensions are obscured because Palestinians are not referred to as indigenous people and Israel is not identified as a colonial power.

…The latest Israeli airstrikes on Gaza were as well portrayed as a “response” to Hamas which is depicted as “an Islamic group sworn to Israel’s destruction.” That Israel is sworn to the destruction of Hamas and to Palestine as such is not part of the discourse. In fact, settler-colonial expansion is genocidal as such and necessitates the removal of the indigenous people.

Disabling Wounds: Genocidal Violence, Paradoxical Indigeneity, and the Logic of Elimination of the Native by J. Kēhaulani Kauanui

Please TAKE ACTION RIGHT NOW and send your letter to the UN Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide and the International Criminal Court Prosecutor.

We might understand this as a paradox that also works with the right to maim—Israelis having it both ways: subjecting structural genocide on Palestinians as indigenous while also asserting that they are not killing them in calculated cold blood (genocide proper). In this twisted logic, actual killings are then justifiable by claiming that massacres enacted to stop “terrorists” (i.e., any Palestinians resisting their own genocide). So, we see a bid for settler innocence while eliminating the Native, one way or another.
