A vote on a controversial resolution expressing support for Palestine and the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel will likely be shelved during a meeting this week of members of the union representing Los Angeles Unified teachers. A substitute motion is expected to be introduced during Thursday’s meeting that calls for the original motion to be postponed indefinitely and for voluntary forums about the conflict in the Middle East to be held instead… Supporters of the original resolution have accused the Israeli government of committing apartheid and genocide against Palestinians.

The fact that the Israeli occupation systematically deprives Palestinians in the Jordan Valley of their right to education creates an entire generation ignorant of their history and cultural identity. Ruining Palestinians’ cultural identity and attempting to erase the collective memory that connects them as a people with other Palestinians is another way, in which Zionism aims to eliminate the native Palestinian people. This amounts to a policy called ‘cultural genocide’. The Right to Education Campaign aims to create facts on the ground to save Palestinians’ cultural identity from obliteration.

The president of Arab American University, a private institution based in the West Bank city of Jenin, condemned Israel’s closure of the college. Ali Abu Zuhri argued it was an attempt to impose new facts on the ground aimed at changing the cultural and historical identity of Jerusalem… Israel’s closure of Hind al-Husseini college “is one more manifestation of Israel’s relentless assault on Palestinian education and culture, a systematic assault that is tantamount to cultural genocide,” Nada Elia, an organizing committee member of the US Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (USACBI), told The Electronic Intifada.

Focusing on the right to a college education may seem like a luxury in the face of incremental genocide. However, when it is understood as part of Israel’s assault on every single aspect of Palestinian life, culture and prospects for a brighter future, it must be denounced for what it is: another cog in Israel’s planned, incremental genocide of the Palestinian people.

Its effects can be seen in the recent cuts (the schools have seen the proportion of their operating costs covered by the state fall from 70 percent to 29 percent), the violation of the freedom of movement of schoolchildren and teachers in the occupied West Bank and harassment by Israeli settlers and soldiers, the targeting and arrest ofpolitically active students, the raiding of Palestinian universities at will and the firing of tear gas into campuses, the bombing of schools in Gaza, the denial of exit visas and travel permits to Palestinians wishing to study abroad or even elsewhere in Palestine and of entry visas to Palestinians with American and other citizenship who wish to teach in their homeland… Educational apartheid in Israel must be understood for what it is: an attempt at cultural genocide. Under the United Nations’ 1948 definition of genocide, this crime may include imposing conditions of life on a racial or ethnic group with the intent of wholly or partly destroying that group…

Only half of Palestinian children in Jerusalem were enrolled in the public school system, a study conducted in 2010-2011 found. Meanwhile, costly private schools are largely unsupervised and often fail to provide basic learning conditions. Palestinian children have limited opportunities of going on to study in Israeli universities or to obtain jobs with decent pay.The Israeli government recognizes only one politicized curriculum — its own Zionist one. This curriculum uses Zionist terminology to describe geographic areas in Palestine, like Judea and Samaria for the West Bank and Temple Mount for Haram al-Sharif, the compound that houses al-Aqsa mosque.
