The depoliticization of healthcare as a site of neutrality showcases the continuous refusal to acknowledge health disparities that are caused by structural harms. The structures of colonialism, militarization, and capitalism perpetuate an erasure of an entire ethnicity in which this case are the Palestinians in the face of Israeli aggression. A statement that isn’t a hyperbole, or a belittlement but a well-documented fact by multiple international human rights organizations. Can Tampa General Hospital advocate for the advancement of health in its community, while it invests in the genocide and displacement of besieged Palestinians?

In fact, growing numbers of global leaders and legal scholars have embraced the term “genocide” following Israel’s 51-day military assault on Gaza during the summer of 2014 that killed more than 2,100 residents and wounded over than 11,000. Among them is the late Michael Ratner, president emeritus of the Center for Constitutional Rights. Martin Shaw, a leading expert on genocide from Roehampton University, has argued that the campaign of ethnic cleansing waged in 1948 by the Zionist movement to establish the state of Israel did indeed fit the definition of genocide.

We are taught concocted histories and rationales of America’s Immaculate Conception and manifested destinies; where ethnic cleansing, slavery, genocide, exploitation, and appropriation exist only as figments of our… imagination. President Obama’s recent comments in the Atlantic are a prime example:
…“There’s a direct line between supporting the right of the Jewish people to have a homeland and to feel safe and free of discrimination and persecution, and the right of African Americans to vote and have equal protection under the law. These things are indivisible in my mind.”’
On its face, it may seem like the above statement shouldn’t warrant even the slightest iota of imagination… President Obama is just reminding us of the strong historical similarities that we share with the apartheid state of Israel. No imagination needed here. I’m sure you’ve heard the story too many times to count, but I’ll refresh your memory.

It wasn’t easy but after the massacre of thousands and mass evacuations of hundreds of thousands, and with millions of whites and native peoples resettled in refugee camps scattered across Mexico, Canada, and Texas, the sons and daughters of African slaves finally had a home to call their own.
