Everyone was determined to return. Even those who moved from a tent in the southern Gaza Strip to a tent in Gaza City. At some point, the rubble of a person’s home itself has become an object of yearning. In Gaza today, people no longer ask one another, “Have you returned to your house?” The first question they rattle off is whether they had managed to salvage anything from the rubble. It was a different sort of right of return.

Gaza (QNN)- Balakrishnan Rajagopal, the UN special rapporteur on the right to adequate housing, said Israel’s destruction of homes in Gaza has been a central component of Israel’s genocide against Palestinians in the territory.

Rajagopal, who has used the term “domicide” to describe the decimation of homes across the Strip, told Al Jazeera that Israel’s goal has been to render it uninhabitable.

… He added that the recovery process will likely take generations. “It’s like another Nakba,” said Rajagopal, referring to the ethnic cleansing of Palestine when Israel was created in 1948, which still affects Palestinians today.

Thousands of Palestinians Return to Gaza City to Find a Wasteland of Rubble by Abdel Qader Sabbah and Sharif Abdel Kouddous

Tens of thousands of displaced Palestinians returned to the north on Friday, making their way along Al-Rashid road. Like Daghmash, many had fled Gaza City following Israel’s brutal military offensive on the city that began in mid-August in a stated campaign of ethnic cleansing. They returned to find many of their neighborhoods unrecognizable.

“We fled under fire wearing only the robe you see on me. We left at night, my whole family and I. We didn’t take a single item from the house. I left just as I am now. I believe nearly all the people of Gaza are going through the same suffering—no shelter, no home, no housing, no clothing, no food or drink. We ended up in the streets—in the streets,” Daghmash said. “God willing, the war won’t come back after this. There’s nothing left for them to destroy. You can see that Gaza has been annihilated completely.”

  2. What happened was like nothing I had ever heard — a tearing, howling explosion that collapsed everything in milliseconds. I didn’t see the ceiling crack or the walls crumble. I only felt the sudden, crushing weight as the world above came down. It wasn’t like falling, but like being smothered into the earth. My body folded awkwardly beneath the debris — arms pinned, legs trapped, ribs crushing against sharp edges.
  4. I tried to scream, but the noise came out as a rasp, a pathetic, choking gasp swallowed by the dark. My chest burned from the effort, but I screamed again anyway — calling out for my wife, my three-year-old son, my parents. Their names ricocheted inside my skull as both the layers of cement and silence pressed in harder.

“We’ve Become Addicted to Explosions” The IDF Unit Responsible for Demolishing Homes Across Gaza by Bellingcat

We asked Professor Balakrishnan Rajagopal, the UN’s Special Rapporteur on adequate housing and the Professor of Law and Development at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology about the demolitions carried out by 8219 Commando. He told us that these demolitions were relevant to the ICJ case on genocide, supporting South Africa’s case that Israel was, in effect, rendering Gaza uninhabitable.

According to the experts, the systematic and widespread destruction of housing, services and civilian infrastructure represents a crime against humanity, a domicide, as well as numerous war crimes and acts of genocide as described by the UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territory in her recent report to the Human Rights Council. With Israeli public officials joining calls for Palestinians to leave Gaza, to “take back Gaza” to build settlements again, and ostensible enthusiasm expressed by prominent former US government officials for “Gaza beachfront” properties, there is little doubt that Israel’s intent goes far beyond the purposes of military defeat of Hamas, they noted… “We are especially concerned about the alleged use of AI to target ‘family homes’ of suspected Hamas operatives, typically at night when they sleep, with unguided munitions known as ‘dumb’ bombs, with little regard for civilians who may be in or around that home,” they said.

Does the destruction of homes in Gaza constitute genocide? by Priya Gupta

The illegality of disproportionate destruction of civilian property and dwellings is currently recognized under international law. However, the significance of the destruction of the home warrants further attention. Whether through its existing role in international crimes or additionally as a separate crime, the atrocities in Gaza highlight the need to recognize domicide as deliberately furthering the destruction of a group.

When Israel attacks Palestinian homes in Gaza, it is doing more than destroying property — it is demonstrating a genocidal intention to destroy Palestinians as a group.

Given the widespread current destruction, the indications of an intent to destroy Palestinians as a group and the International Court of Justice’s ruling on the plausibility of genocide in Gaza, there are compelling reasons to assess Israel’s destruction of Palestinian homes as genocide.

UN experts say Israel should be held accountable for acts of ‘domicide’ by United Nations Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner

The international community must take action to stop systematic and deliberate housing demolition and sealing, arbitrary displacement and forced evictions of Palestinian people in the occupied West Bank, UN experts* said today.

… “The systematic demolition of Palestinian homes, erection of illegal Israeli settlements and systematic denial of building permits for Palestinians in the occupied West Bank amounts to “domicide”.

… “Direct attacks on the Palestinian people’s homes, schools, livelihoods and water sources are nothing but Israel’s attempts to curtail the Palestinians’ right to self-determination and to threaten their very existence,” the experts said.

… The experts have repeatedly raised concerns with the Government of Israel on these issues. No response has been received to date.
