Palestinians are merely following the example of Polish Jews during the 1943 Warsaw Ghetto uprising, who so courageously resisted German Nazis. Israel’s recurring wars against the people of Gaza, including the currently termed Operation Breaking Dawn launched on August 5, clearly highlight the parallels between the Warsaw Ghetto and Gaza as an Israeli concentration camp. Allan Wolman’s repeated smears of everything South African ignore the reality that Israel is an apartheid state that is guilty of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Notwithstanding Israeli propaganda, there is a growing international awareness of Israel’s destruction of more than 500 Palestinian villages over a period of two years (1947-1949), its cruel expulsion of the majority of people of historical Palestine, its refusal to grant them the right of return, its blatant violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949, its brutal occupation of Palestinian territories since 1967, its acquiescence of the continued theft of Palestinian property by settlers, its connivance in the destruction of Palestinian crops and property, its incremental genocide, and its extreme and questionable methods to achieve the Zionification of East Jerusalem.

In 1948, Zionists proclaimed the settler-colonial state of Israel which too, as in the case of the Union of SA, received de jure recognition despite the fact that it was created as a result of the dispossession and mass expulsion of the indigenous population. However, Israel’s brutal occupation of the West Bank, its merciless siege of Gaza, its continued theft of Palestinian land and water resources, its settlement construction, its large-scale detention and imprisonment of Palestinians, and its practice of “incremental genocide” (a term used by a Jewish and non-Zionist academic, Ilan Pappe), continue to erode support for Israel and thus its legitimacy.
