Hind Rajab’s grandmother rejects Israeli military investigation into her killing by Hosni Nedim, Tarek Chouiref

The grandmother of five-year-old Palestinian girl Hind Rajab rejected an Israeli military probe into her killing Wednesday, saying the family has no confidence in Israeli investigations and demands an independent international investigation.

Her remarks came after the Israeli army acknowledged earlier Wednesday that its forces had fired on the car carrying Hind in Gaza City in January 2024 and announced a criminal investigation into her killing.

… The grandmother called for an independent international investigation into the killing of Hind, six of her relatives and two Palestine Red Crescent medics who tried to rescue her.

She said the family’s demand for accountability goes beyond Hind’s case and should also cover the killing of Palestinian children during Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza.

The genocide in Gaza is far from over by Raz Segal

The genocidal rhetoric, furthermore, has not ended. Take, for instance, Simcha Rothman, a member of the Knesset (the Israeli parliament) for the Religious Zionist Party, who spoke on 28 October in an international summit in Hungary organized in support of Israel. “If we want to destroy the idea of genocide,” he said, “if we want to destroy [it] and we should destroy the idea of Muslim Brotherhood that takes over the entire west, the Middle East, but after that, the entire world, the entire western civilization, we have to define it as the enemy.” “The enemy in Gaza,” he continued, “are not the terror tunnels, the enemy in Gaza are not the missiles, the enemy in Gaza are not even the terrible people who took the hostages; the enemy in Gaza is the idea of a genocide, the same idea that echoes in mosques all around Europe, the same idea that echoes in mosques in the US, in campuses, in encampments, the same idea, this is the enemy.”

This portrayal of Gaza as “the idea of a genocide,” a genocide against Jews, and against Jews as foundational in “western civilization,” figures within a long history of perpetrators of very real genocides who perceived themselves as acting in defense of “barbarians” threatening “western civilization.” The war in Gaza, then, has not ended, according to Rothman, because it was never a war in Gaza, but a war on Gaza.

An MD/PhD candidate who was threatened with professional retaliation by an ex-IDF soldier working at her hospital for wearing a keffiyeh-print scrub cap offers a stark example of the institutionalized anti-Palestinian racism pervading US medical schools and its harmful effects. This firsthand account relies on ethnographic insight to unpack how systemic repression travels from hospital hallways to the dean’s office, silencing those who refuse to stay quiet about the ongoing genocide in Gaza. With medical students facing blacklisting, suspensions, and retaliation for speaking out, this piece invites readers to confront the complicity of U.S. institutions in enabling both genocide abroad and repression at home.

… The frame through which these impossibly discordant scenes can somehow be reconciled is that of the Genocide Enablement Apparatus described by Dr. Ghassan Abu Sittah. He identifies repression not as a byproduct but a central component of a singular apparatus operating across distant continents and disparate scales—from the microscopic to the genocidal—as it seeks to erase symbols of Palestinian life—like a keffiyeh print scrub cap—from the workplace and the earth.

It feels absurd to dissect the mechanisms of students’ repression after witnessing 18 months of violence carried out on a genocidal scale. Yet understanding the logic through which this microscopic form of violence operates allows us to resist it more effectively and, after all, Palestinians will free Palestine. The most effective form of solidarity we can offer from the imperial core is to clean up our own dirty backyard: to trace the winding pathways through which our institutions operate to enable the US-backed genocide, articulate these causal links with precision, and demand accountability in the places where we have maximum leverage.
