  • The evidence examined in this report describes a single, integrated phenomenon that, in many respects, constitutes mediacide: the destruction of the media’s essential function in the information environment surrounding the occupied Palestinian territory. It operates through three mutually reinforcing processes: (a) the systematic elimination of Palestinian journalists and their means of documentation; (b) the dissemination and normalization of genocidal incitement and denial by Israeli authorities and segments of the Israeli media; and (c) the reproduction by influential Western media and digital platforms of narratives that obscure, justify or legitimize atrocity crimes while marginalizing Palestinian voices, evidence and international law.

“As a Jewish person, I think it’s often that the narrative is split into a religious divide,” the student said. “I think Jewish people showing their solidarity and showing that it doesn’t represent what the religion really is. Judaism, a religion about liberation and equality and perseverance, shouldn’t be something that’s being used to perpetrate genocide and ethnic cleansing and the things happening in Palestine right now.”

The similarities between Australia and Israel should come as no surprise. Settler colonial societies are a distinct type of imperialist formation, which are premised on the racist elimination of the indigenous population through various means, including ethnic cleansing, genocide and/or assimilation.
