  • Backers of the UK Green Party‘s landmark ‘Zionism is racism’ motion celebrated the proposal’s passing into policy on Sunday, with supporters telling The New Arab that this is the start of a bigger movement.
  • The motion passed by an overwhelming 1,022 votes to 813, with all but three amendments being rejected during the annual Green Party conference held in Brighton.
  • The move means the party has adopted an official anti-Zionist stance, treating the ideology as a form of racism.
  • Members in favour of the motion walked out of the auditorium at the Brighton Centre jubilantly smiling and cheering.
  • “This is hope for the future of our people, for the future of all oppressed, and sets an example and a precedent that we, as a people, are unified, we oppose injustice, we oppose occupation, oppression, genocide, apartheid, and racism, and that includes Zionism,” Lubna Speitan, author of the motion, told The New Arab.

He was also unofficially backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), whose members were mobilized to campaign for him. This despite his avowed opposition to socialism.
  • El-Sayed’s decision to welcome Harris, a central figure in the Biden administration that armed, financed and diplomatically shielded Israel throughout the slaughter, exposes the political function of his campaign. Opposition to genocide is being subordinated to the election of another Democratic senator.

Azeez Al-Shaair removed eye black bearing name of slain Palestinian girl during Week 2 game: Source by Jonathan Jones

  • Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair made international headlines after Week 1 when the NFL fined him for writing the name of a Palestinian girl killed in Gaza on his eyeblack in a game. He wore the name of a different slain Palestinian girl on his eye black last Sunday before removing it during the game.

Al-Shaair began the Texans’ Week 2 game against the Cincinnati Bengals with the name Wafaa Akila written on his eyeblack. After it was spotted by a league official, Al-Shaair was informed he would have to remove it or he would not be permitted to continue playing in the game, according to a league source who spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

While Al-Shaair was fined $11,941 in Week 1, the source told The Athletic he was not fined in Week 2.

According to Reuters, Wafaa Akila was an 8-year-old Palestinian girl killed earlier this month by an Israeli airstrike.

… Al-Shaair wore eye black with “stop the genocide” written on it during warmups before the Texans’ playoff game against the New England Patriots last January.

The international criminal court has a warrant out for his arrest for war crimes and crimes against humanity. The UN’s own commission of inquiry has found that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza and named Netanyahu as its chief architect.
  • As the Democratic nominee for New York’s 13th congressional district, I refuse to allow a war criminal to roam the streets of our city unchallenged. I refuse to play host to a man who has overseen the slaughter or injury of more than 64,000 children in Gaza with American taxpayer dollars. I refuse to be complicit in genocide.

‘Ongoing Genocide against Palestine’: Ramaphosa Demands Accountability at BRICS by The Palestine Chronicle

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for accountability for the “ongoing genocide against the people of Palestine,” placing Gaza at the center of his appeal for the equal application of international law during the BRICS leaders’ summit in New Delhi.

Addressing the summit on Saturday, Ramaphosa said international law could retain its authority only if violations were met with accountability, regardless of the state responsible.

“To give strength to the law, there must be accountability for atrocities, for the ongoing genocide against the people of Palestine, for the crimes committed against the people of the Sudan, and for the illegal war against Iran,” Ramaphosa said.

“We must exert pressure and expose violations whenever and by whomever they are committed. International law cannot be applied selectively,” he added.

The decision is tied to Singapore’s policies on public speech, which prohibit publicly displaying foreign national emblems without a permit or exemption. In 2023, the city-state’s Ministry of Home Affairs shared a release specifically discouraging citizens from wearing or displaying articles that address the Israel-Palestine conflict. “The peace and harmony between different races and religions in Singapore should not be taken for granted, and we must not let events happening externally affect this peace and harmony we have in Singapore,” it noted.

… “We are proud to have made this impromptu expression with our fans in Singapore who clearly felt a moral imperative to show solidarity with the people of Palestine in their ongoing reality of illegal occupation, apartheid, and genocide, and we salute their courage in doing so,” the band wrote. “Right across the world, the continued inaction of the ‘international’ community is moving citizens to personal risk.”

Mamdani urges US government to arrest Netanyahu if Israeli PM visits US on The Guardian

Zohran Mamdani, the New York City mayor, acknowledged on Tuesday he does not have the authority to arrest Benjamin Netanyahu, but urged US federal authorities to do so if the Israeli prime minister visits the US later this year.

“Benjamin Netanyahu is a war criminal, the architect of a horrific genocide against the Palestinian people,” Mamdani said in a video posted to social media.

Atop State Department official under Joe Biden has acknowledged that Israel has committed genocide in Gaza with the help of the U.S. — but says that it is still “critical” for the U.S. to continue backing the genocidal state despite laws explicitly prohibiting such a practice.

Former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, who served in the role up until July 2023, is seemingly the most senior Biden administration official to label Israel’s slaughter as a “genocide” in public remarks so far, save for a few officials who resigned from the administration in protest over the backing of Israel’s slaughter.

In an interview with Bloomberg published on Friday, Sherman said that both Democrats and Republicans “have not dealt with the Middle East in a way that’s helped create stability and peace,” and lamented that domestic politics have become “very tied up with our relationship with Israel.”

Over a thousand UK councillors sign pledge to uphold Palestinian rights by Imran Mulla

More than a thousand local councillors have signed a pledge to “uphold the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people” and ensure their councils are not complicit in “Israel‘s violations of international law”.

… The pledge was launched by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, which organises national pro-Palestine marches in London, and was supported by the Palestinian Youth Movement Britain, the Palestinian Forum in Britain, The Muslim Vote and the British Palestinian Committee.

… Multiple local authorities in the past year have voted to boycott companies that are complicit in Israeli war crimes, arm Israel or benefit from its occupation of Palestinian territory.

In March, Oxford City Council passed a motion supporting the BDS movement against Israel, citing International Court of Justice (ICJ) rulings.

Labour-run Cumberland council also said it would withdraw investments from companies supplying weapons to Israel.

In December, Labour-run Newcastle council passed a motion committing to review its financial ties with companies “complicit with the genocide and/or illegal occupation” in Gaza and the occupied West Bank. 

And the pension funds of numerous councils – including Islington, Lewisham, Wandsworth and Caerphilly – have excluded companies on the United Nations list of businesses involved in the occupied Palestinian territories.
