This is a letter to unequivocally demand accountability and immediate action from professional bodies, boards, associations, schools, institutions, organizations, and platforms in the mental health field and all related disciplines (mental, social, emotional, behavioral, holistic, and psychiatric health). We will refer to these interconnected bodies and institutions upholding disproportionate power as the “field” in this letter.- We demand accountability, immediate response, and reparative actions for the perpetuation of accumulated trauma through its complicity in the ongoing genocide in Palestine. Moreover, we condemn the unethical and harmful practices of neglecting, silencing, suppressing, and punishing mental-health workers and students advocating for Palestinian liberation.
- As of the publishing of this letter, 20,000+ Palestinians have been killed since 10/7/23, 8,000+ being children. This does not account for the deaths and violent displacements of Palestinians over 75 years of occupation, and the Nakba or “The Catastrophe”. Click here to see the latest tolls of death, injury, and displacement and why these numbers are under-reported. Palestinians are not merely numbers – each tally represents a name, a precious life, a story, a part of a lineage.
- Our demands center on four critical areas of action:
- 1. The provision of equitable care and mental health support, assurance of protection and legal support;
- 2. Culturally-responsive educational spaces for advocates, activists, and learners for liberation;
- 3. Acknowledgment of historical and racialized trauma in the context of the ongoing genocide in Palestine, with commitment to action and structural change;
- 4. Acknowledgment of the field’s complicity and trauma perpetuation, with commitment to action and structural change
