Daniel Denvir : Any attempt at understanding Hamas has been stigmatized as supporting Hamas. To provide context is to effectively condone the massacres of Israeli civilians on October 7th. Condemning Hamas must be the very first sentence out of your mouth before saying anything else about what’s happening. And even that is not good enough. But understanding Hamas is precisely what must happen if we are to end injustice and create peace. Because the monsterification of Hamas, above all else, serves the purpose of mystifying what causes violence and what will end it. It obscures the political roots of the violence and thus also the political solutions that would end it. The opponents of peace accomplish this by fetishizing Hamas’ violence so as to mistify the fundamental violence that is the Israeli occupation, the apartheid state, and ongoing genocide.
