People’s tribunals, and the roots of civil society justice by Richard Falk

Most recently, in September 2014, in response to the Israeli attack on Gaza, given the name Operation Protective Edge, the Russell Foundation convened an event in Brussels in which a jury of conscience listened to evidence, and particularly considered charges of ‘genocide’ put forward by critics of the attack…

It should also be observed that the Brussels Tribunal failed to uphold the most serious charge leveled against Israel in relation to Protective Edge, that the massive assault carried out against the defenseless civilian population of Gaza constituted genocide. On the basis of the evidence presented, the jury in Brussels did agree that Israel was guilty of the lesser crime of ‘Incitement to Genocide’ as set forth in Article 3(c) of the Genocide Convention.  It also agreed that the additional treaty duty to prevent genocide had been definitely violated by Israeli behavior during Protective Edge…

Israeli Politician Who Called for Genocide of Palestinian People Named Justice Minister by Joey Ayoub

Shaked, a member of the far-right HaBayit HaYehudi (“Jewish Home”) party, made headlines last year after she deemed the entire Palestinian people “the enemy” on Facebook and essentially argued for their extermination “because the enemy soldiers hide out among the population, and it is only through its support that they can fight.” Many condemned her comments as calling for genocide of the Palestinian people… While shocking, her statement was not the first time that Israeli leaders have been accused of inciting violence against Palestinians, including genocide. Indeed, Israeli activist David Sheen’s testimony at the Russell Tribunal for Palestine revealed a worrying trend within Israeli society. Here are some of the people Sheen highlighted in his presentation…

Watch: testimonies of atrocities in Gaza from the Russell Tribunal

The Russell Tribunal on Palestine convened an emergency session in Brussels last month to examine whether Israel committed war crimes in the besieged Gaza Strip during “Operation Protective Edge,” the summertime military assault that killed more than 2,100 Palestinians, including more than 500 children, and left Gaza in ruins.

After hearing testimony from journalists, eyewitnesses, legal scholars and physicians present during the onslaught, the twelve-member jury, made up of world-renowned intellectuals and international law experts, found Israel guilty of “war crimes, crimes against humanity, crimes of murder, extermination and persecution and also incitement to genocide…”

Taken together, the testimonies presented at the Russell Tribunal (all of which can be viewed here) demonstrate a clear pattern of intentional destruction of Gaza and its people by an increasingly extreme settler-colonial state “primed for genocide,” as Max Blumenthal put it.

Genocide does not happen overnight or in a vacuum. There are warning signs, many of which were raised at the Russell Tribunal.
