Fury as Israel Refuses Visa to South African Politician by L. Herbst

Nzimande who is also general secretary of the South African Communist Party claimed in the past that Israel was waging a “vicious campaign” against the Palestinians and called for South Africa to boycott Israeli imports in retaliation. He said that the Palestinians are being massacred for the crime of demanding the return of their land and self-determination. “This genocidal campaign must be condemned in the strongest terms possible,” he said.

South Africa: Will the ANC Government Ever Prosecute South Africans Serving in the Israeli Defence Force? by Eddie Cottle

When South African security services prevented a Cape Town girl from boarding a plane allegedly to join ISIS, many South Africans were pleased but at the same time surprised at how swift the reaction of our security services were. How come the same reaction is not applied to South African Zionist Jews serving in the Israeli Defence Force (IDF)?.. With the ‘incremental genocide’ underway in Palestine, according to Israeli historian Ilan Pappé, world action is most urgent. The time has come for the ANC government to prosecute South Africans serving in the Israeli Defence force or has the ANC lost its moral compass completely?

Statement for Launch of 11th Israeli Apartheid Week 2015 by Children of Mandela, Kathrada, Sisulu, Dadoo, Naude, Chikane and Other South African Struggle Stalwarts

There is a growing momentum and tide within the world of culture for example, amongst well known sports people, celebrities, musicians, actors and comedians. From Selena Gomez to Mark Rufallo, Penelope Cruz, John Cusack, John Legend and other high profile celebrities all come out during Israel’s attacks on Gaza, using social media and other platforms, on the issue of Palestine. Some have tweeted #FreePalestine while others have gone further in slamming the Israeli attacks on Gaza as a “genocide”. And the number that have joined the boycott of Israel is growing on a daily basis.

The groundswell of support for the Palestinian struggle and BDS campaign, coming from all quarters of the academic and cultural community and even major corporations, in many ways is a result of the practical, strategic and goal-orientated boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) of Israel movement that is capturing the world by storm. BDS offers a non-violent route and path for us to channel our energies.

Clarification Statement by the DUT Student Representative Council

The Students Representative Council (SRC) of the Durban University of Technology (DUT) apologises without reservation to any one offended by recent demands made by us regarding Jewish students.

We would like to clarify that our position is, in fact, that Israel is an Apartheid, genocidal and terrorist State and that in solidarity with our Palestinian people who are currently oppressed and colonised by Israel we demand that ANY student Jewish, Muslim, Christian even Atheist or any other that is funded by the Apartheid State of Israel and its institutions must not be students in DUT, and if there are any, they must be immediately de-registered. Our campuses will not be breeding grounds for Apartheid.

Is Israel Committing the Crime of Genocide? by Amandla!

Please TAKE ACTION RIGHT NOW and send your letter to the UN Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide and the International Criminal Court Prosecutor.

As Dr. Rania Masri points out, it is crucial to [understand] that the Palestinians constitute a national entity. Israel’s human rights violations against one part of the group in fact apply to the whole, since one of Israel’s crimes against the indigenous people of Palestine is their geographic division. The [Russell] tribunal is focusing on Gaza, and within that narrow scope it has already found it instructive to examine Israel’s actions according to the criteria of the Convention on the Crime of Genocide. Meanwhile a journalist for Electronic Intifada, Rania Khalek (among others), has put Israel’s human rights violations against the whole of the Palestinian people in context – in Gaza, the West Bank, inside the 1948 armistice line, and the flow of Palestinian refugees around the world. Her coverage has revealed an horrific picture of Israel’s “intent to destroy” a “national group under the definition of genocide”.

Palestinians and the Belgium Supreme Court have been talking about “acts of genocide” since Ariel Sharon came to power in 2003, but many others have concurred in the view that such a term is appropriate since then. It seems that Israel’s latest assault on Gaza has culminated in a tsunami of allegations of genocide. A global campaign called “Israel Genocide?” (http://israelgenocide.wordpress.com/) is calling for the UN Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide to “investigate the possibility that Israel is committing the Crime of Genocide against the Palestinian People, and that the it publish its findings and recommendations.”

South African activist, Martin Jansen on Israel’s Apartheid: “Palestinians face racism, but they also face genocide.”

Martin Jansen:

“For me, it is obvious that Palestinians have it much worse than we have ever experienced. Palestinians face racism, but they also face genocide. That genocide takes the form of occupation, removing people from land, and imprisoning them in Gaza: an open-air prison. The West Bank is not that different from Gaza. Palestinians are literally prisoners in a prisoner of war camp. My analysis is that it is a colonial, occupation, settler regime conducting genocide against Palestinians.

From 1948 onwards, when the right wing came to power in South Africa, they tried to introduce a Bantustan system where Africans would be part of those supposed countries. It was similar to what Palestinians face, but the treatment wasn’t half as bad. Africans were required to carry passbooks, like Palestinians. But there was no attempt by the apartheid regime to get rid of Africans or any other group that was not identified white. In fact, there was an economic dependence for cheap labor. There were quite a few massacres in the history of apartheid, but they certainly were not bombed. We never had so many people detained either.”

Ronnie Kasrils: Gaza and the ‘crime of crimes’

“Millions of us in South Africa collectively recoiled from Israel’s gruesome assault on the people of Gaza during those 51 nightmarish days of “Operation Protective Edge” and the attendant ongoing cruelty in the West Bank. As the dust settled, we were left shocked beyond belief as we witnessed a community of 1.8 million in ruins; Khozaa, Shujaiyya, Beit Hanoun, with entire families and neighbourhoods, gone…

For the first time with regards to Israel and its’ actions in Gaza, the Russell Tribunal on Palestine, which I am proud to be a juror for, has examined the crime of genocide. As Professor John Dugard, another Tribunal Jurist explains: “The crime of genocide is the crime of crimes. Great care should be taken in considering it. Nevertheless Operation Protective Edge was of such gravity that the Russell Tribunal believes it is necessary to consider whether this crime has been committed.

South African protest against bombing in Gaza

“… combining legal and illegal means to free themselves. Because what is happening there is a genocide. What is happening there is a plan by Israel to wipe out every Palestinian in this world. So comrades, by persuasion, if necessary, the ambassador of Israel must leave South Africa…”

Are the Palestinians Israel’s Native Americans?

A few months ago I wrote a post titled The Problem With BDS where I argued that the comparison of Israel with with South Africa may not be appropriate and perhaps counterproductive to the interests of the Palestinians. My position in not an original one and is primarily derived from Chomsky’s assessment of the circumstances. Since then, Chomsky has published an essay in The Nation explaining his position in detail. Predictably, Chomsky’s essay has been selectively quoted by the likes of Fred Lazin who, in a recent appearance on CrossTalk, conveniently omitted the fact that Chomsky’s criticism of the analogy between Israel and South Africa is due to the fact that, in his view, “the road ahead is not toward South Africa, as commonly alleged, but toward something much worse.”

The “much worse” is the slow and steady elimination, as Chomsky puts it, of Israel’s “Palestinian burden.” As he explains, unlike South Africa – where the black population was the white’s workforce –  Israel doesn’t need the Palestinians. It is for this reason that, in my opinion, the genocide of Native Americans by European settlers seems a more apt comparison.
