Genocide scholars pull out of Israel conference by Ali Abunimah

Please TAKE ACTION RIGHT NOW and send your letter to the UN Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide and the International Criminal Court Prosecutor.

The vice-president of the International Network of Genocide Scholars has pulled out of the group’s conference at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, following appeals by Palestine solidarity campaigners. BDS South Africa, an organization supporting the Palestinian call for a boycott of Israel, has announced that University of Cape Town professor Mohamed Adhikari had informed it that he has withdrawn his presentation from the conference. The British genocide scholar Martin Shaw has also announced he is pulling out of the conference, which begins Sunday. Earlier this week, South Africa’s Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation also withdrew from the conference, citing concerns about Israel’s violations of Palestinian human rights… At least 270 academics from 19 different countries heeded that call and signed their names to a letter urging conference organizers “to act in a principled way” and relocate the event to another country.

Why I’m not discussing genocide in Jerusalem by Martin Shaw

Please TAKE ACTION RIGHT NOW and send your letter to the UN Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide and the International Criminal Court Prosecutor.

Thus far, I am sympathetic to the ambitions for this conference. Its programme is impressive. My absence, however, is not accidental. It is one thing to avoid political commitments, as INOGS has managed to do up to now. It is another, when holding an event in a site of conflict, to accept the position advocated by one side and to reject the position adopted by the other. Whether INOGS likes it or not, the academic boycott of Israel is part of this conflict.

South Africa’s CSVR Withdraws from Genocide Studies Conference in Israel by PACBI

Please TAKE ACTION RIGHT NOW and send your letter to the UN Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide and the International Criminal Court Prosecutor.

CSVR has shown with this decision admirable consistency with its mission of social justice, sustainable peace and human rights. CSVR stated in a statement that it “cannot turn a blind eye to the nature of the location and the host institutions for the conference.”..We thank also our partner BDS South Africa for making CSVR aware of the Palestinian appeal for a boycott of the conference and the facts about the Hebrew University role in colonizing Palestinian land and entrenching the Israeli occupation and apartheid.

An open letter from human rights defenders to Mr. Adama Dieng, concerning participation in the INoGS 2016 annual conference on BADIL

Please TAKE ACTION RIGHT NOW and send your letter to the UN Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide and the International Criminal Court Prosecutor.

Mr Dieng,

We, the 28 undersigned organizations, call upon you – in your capacity as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Advisor on the Prevention of Genocide –  to withdraw your participation from the annual conference of the International Network of Genocide Scholars (INoGS), scheduled to take place June 26-29 2016, at the Hebrew University in occupied East Jerusalem.

… Palestinian and international human rights organizations are currently in the process of presenting evidence of Israeli war crimes and crimes against humanity to the International Criminal Court, including compelling evidence of international crimes with close associations to genocide, such as murder, forcible transfer and persecution. These efforts have been met with threats and harassment from governmental and non-governmental actors.

For the above reasons, both the location of the INoGS conference and its attendance are incompatible with your mandate, which strives to protect populations from the worst international crimes. We, the undersigned, therefore reiterate our call for you to act out of principle and in accordance with the spirit of your mandate, and withold your participation in the conference until such a time that the event is relocated to another country. Failure to do so would represent tacit acceptance of Israeli-perpetrated grave breaches of international law, and severely undermine the legitimacy of the mandate.

Hundreds of academics call to boycott genocide conference in Israel by Rami Younis

Please TAKE ACTION RIGHT NOW and send your letter to the UN Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide and the International Criminal Court Prosecutor.

Nearly 270 academics from 19 countries are calling to boycott the fifth Global Conference on Genocide, set to take place on June 26-29 at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. In a letter sent to the International Network of Genocide Scholars (INoGS) on May 3, the academics pointed to the hypocrisy of having the conference in Israel at a time when Israel’s actions are “increasingly being viewed through lenses of ethnic cleansing and genocide linked to settler colonialism.”

Palestinians call for boycott of genocide conference in Jerusalem by Rania Khalek

Please TAKE ACTION RIGHT NOW and send your letter to the UN Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide and the International Criminal Court Prosecutor.

The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel has called for a boycott of this year’s conference of the International Network of Genocide Scholars (INoGS) in Jerusalem… The title of this year’s conference is, ironically, “Intersections: Holocaust Scholarship, Genocide Research and Histories of Mass Violence.”.. One of the scheduled speakers is Adama Dieng, special adviser on the prevention of genocide to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

… The conference is scheduled to take place from 26 to 29 July at Hebrew University’s Mount Scopus campus, some of which was constructed on land that Israel illegally expropriated from Palestinians in East Jerusalem after Israel militarily occupied the West Bank in 1967… “The conference is sponsored by five deeply complicit Israeli academic institutions,” PACBI states. “Israeli universities are profoundly complicit in developing weapon systems and military doctrines deployed in Israel’s recent war crimes in Lebanon and Gaza; justifying the ongoing colonization of Palestinian land, rationalizing the gradual ethnic cleansing of the indigenous Palestinians; providing moral justification for extrajudicial killings and indiscriminate attacks against civilians; systematically discriminating against ‘non-Jewish’ students in admissions, dormitory room eligibility, financial aid, etc.; and many other implicit and explicit violations of human rights and international law.”

… At the very least, says PACBI, “Whether Israel’s decades-old crimes against the Palestine people meet the UN definition of genocide or not, they should make any honest scholar think twice before participating in a conference on genocide organized by Israeli universities on occupied Palestinian land.”

Colonized Land is No Place for an International Network of Genocide Scholars (INoGS) Conference

The “Israel Genocide?” campaign adds its voice to the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) call to UN officials, academic associations and scholars, to boycott the 2016 conference of the International Network of Genocide Scholars (INoGS).

We maintain that Israel is in violation of the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, in particular Article II, which defines the crime:

In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

(a) Killing members of the group;

(b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;

(c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;

(d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;

(e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

We view the holding of the conference in a colonial state that violates the genocide convention, not only as a cynical act, but an act that lends Israel legitimacy to continue violating the convention, thus harming the global community’s ability to prevent genocide. There should be no exceptions to a rule that strives to protect humanity from the most heinous crimes.

While Israel and Israeli officials have yet to be tried for the crime of genocide in courts of law that has authority to deliver punishment, we recognize the fact that genocide is the least tried crime in the category of Crimes Against Humanity. We trust that genocide scholars know first hand the frustration of watching crimes on a mass scale being committed while legal bureaucracies fail to implement solutions.

Israel is no stranger to scholarly debates over its systematic violations within the field of genocide, and we believe academics are not only theorists, but also moral agents who have impact on the real world. You are now in a position to act against genocide. Please boycott the INoGS Conference unless this conference is relocated from Israel and its colonies, and its organizers reject institutional Israeli sponsorship of this event.
