In “straight news reporting” the reporter and her editors are not supposed to “take a side.” That’s why, for instance, in news stories about the genocide being carried out today by the governments of Myanmar, China, India and Israel, reporters and editors at responsible newspapers include statements from the governments of Myanmar, China, India, Israel and the United States that no such thing is happening — though it is.
Let’s not get into the question of whether reporting like this is actually “straight news.”
In a slower, more honest age, editors might have been allowed to give reporters a bit of time to examine the genocidal governments’ statements. But not today. Now we throw in the bullshit to show that we’re trying to “report both sides.”

Abo Fahmi says that the whole process of freeing the sperm from prison is “reviving the soul of resistance for the prisoner and his family”. He says that “ending the bloodline does not just apply to the prisoner – it affects all Palestinians, and infringes their human rights. It is genocide.”
Broadcaster: You said Israel was a murderous and genocidal state. Do you stand by your word?
Broadcaster: Do you say it for the Kurds in Turkey?
Boris: Yes, the same for all countries like Israel, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, which violate human rights. These countries must meet international norms. It doesn’t matter how powerful these countries are, regardless of their power, we need to defend the rights of these nations.
It is indeed the recognition of this direct causal relationship between international complicity and the ever-widening sphere of Israel’s criminal activities that has formed the basis upon which popular movements such as BDS have established their strategy of resistance. A brutal occupation, apartheid, and genocide which has endured for over 73 years simply could not exist, let alone thrive, without international support and complicity.

In an appeal to Miss Universe contestants who are gathering in Israel for the Miss Universe Pageant, the ruling Palestinian National Liberation Movement, Fatah, today called on the contestants to oppose Israel’s apartheid regime and withdraw from the contest.
…”The State of Israel is an apartheid state at the core. By participating in the forthcoming Miss Universe Beauty Pageant you are actively partaking in a sustained effort of a rogue State, the apartheid State of Israel, to cover its apartheid core by the forthcoming Pageant,” said the appeal, calling on the contestants “not to take part in this regime of oppression, genocide and ethnic cleansing.”

Palestinians’ plight is a collective failure of the international community, especially the advocates of democracy and human rights. This has to come to an end, and Gazans especially must be saved from genocide. It is a pity that when the world is moving towards geo-economic amalgamation, Palestinians are a condemned and cajoled community. Will someone with conscience stand up for them?

Even the worst atrocity can be tolerated and explained, if it is de-contextualized – namely is not related to an ideology – and, thus, the discreet dots of Israeli criminality are not connected together to provide the full and truthful picture of the real intent of the settler-colonial project of Zionism that will not end until it is stopped – which is to eliminate the Palestinians and Palestine. I am sure we all understand that elimination can take more than one form: it could be genocide, it could be incremental ethnic cleansing, sieges, closures, blockades and starvation, as well the erasure of heritage, history and culture. It can take place in dramatic operations or on a daily basis and can be directed towards the individual or the society, as a whole.
…when Rivlin, in October 2014, had declared that “Israeli society is sick, and it is our duty to treat this disease,” a Haaretz columnist lashed out, suggesting that “Rivlin’s comments are positively bursting with Jew-hatred”.
“First he called Jewish society ‘sick’—dredging up anti-Semitic tropes about Jews as carriers of cultural and ideological disease. Then he asked whether Jews are ‘decent human beings’: Questioning their humanity itself,” the article argued.
Of course, the sickness of “violence, hostility, bullying, [and] racism”, that Rivlin had then pointed out, is very much real. Other symptoms of this horrible disease also include military occupation, apartheid and genocidal violence like that frequently meted out against the besieged Gaza Strip.
