Bassem Tamimi on court decision to hold family members indefinitely: ‘we can’t expect anything else from the court, this is life under occupation’ by Mersiha Gadzo

An Israeli military court ruled today to keep 16-year-old Ahed Tamimi and her mother Nariman in prison until the end of their trial.  Ahed, a well-known Palestinian activist was detained a month ago after a video was published online of Ahed slapping and hitting two Israeli soldiers, yelling at them to leave her family’s property.

The Tamimi family from Nabi Saleh are well known activists who have led non-violent protests against the illegal Israeli military occupation for nearly a decade. Ahed’s father Bassem was previously arrested nine times and spent four years in prison where he was tortured. He spent 14 months in jail simply waiting for a trial, which was repeatedly postponed. Bassem told Mondoweiss that he won’t be surprised if the same happens to Ahed and Nariman with the goal of detaining them for as long as possible.

“I expect the worst from the occupation,” Bassem told Mondoweiss.

“Honestly, we can’t expect anything else from the court; the court is a component of this occupation. It’s used by the legal system to punish the Palestinians.”

“They target all Palestinians… they want to show the world that, ‘We just punish those who resist.’ That’s not true. They punish all Palestinians because they’re Palestinians and they exist. This is a genocide since 1948,” Bassem said.

In words and deeds: The genesis of Israeli violence by Ramzy Baroud

Undeniably, the views of Ariel, Bennett and Caspit are not angry statements uttered in a moment of rage. They are all reflections of real policies that have been carried out for over 70 years. Indeed, killing, raping and imprisoning for life are features that have accompanied the state of Israel since the very beginning.

This violent legacy continues to define Israel to this day, through the use of what Israeli historian Ilan Pappe describes as “incremental genocide”.

Throughout this long legacy, little has changed except for names and titles. The Zionist militias that orchestrated the genocide of the Palestinians prior to the establishment of Israel in 1948 merged together to form the Israeli army; and the leaders of these groups became Israel’s leaders.

Minister Uri Ariel said Wednesday that there needs to be more dead and wounded Palestinians in Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip, reported Haaretz… “Speaking on Reshet Bet radio, the agriculture and rural development minister asked, “What is this special weapon we have that we fire and see pillars of smoke and fire, but nobody gets hurt? It is time for there to be injuries and deaths as well.”

The Legacy of Ethnic Cleansing by Daniel Blatman

Please TAKE ACTION RIGHT NOW and send your letter to the UN Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide and the International Criminal Court Prosecutor.

This planned deportation is the latest in a long line of historical injustices the Jewish state has perpetrated since 1948. It puts Israel in a place of dishonor alongside states whose history includes genocide, ethnic cleansing, and the deportation of refugees and asylum seekers. But unlike in the past, when mass expulsions took place in situations of war or violent conflicts – which obviously did not grant legitimacy to crimes against humanity – this time the circumstances are different. This time, it’s only the desire to keep the Jewish state forever pure.

Why I Accused Israel of Cultural Genocide by James Zogby

Please TAKE ACTION RIGHT NOW and send your letter to the UN Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide and the International Criminal Court Prosecutor.

It was, therefore, not “who invented hummus” that caused me to react. Rather, it was Israel’s appropriation of Palestinian land, eradication of their presence, and now the effort to be the sole claimants of their culture that prompted my response to Ray’s “Israeli food” tweet. This was cultural appropriation by conquest… And so what troubled me then, and still troubles me, are the parallels with the Native American experience. Their land had been taken, their history and rights were denied, and now their culture was claimed by the very people who dispossessed them. This according to Article 8 of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples is termed “genocide”.

Recognition under International Law by Aarif Muzafar Rather

What proceeded the emigration of Jews into Palestine is a story of great distress and a living account of the evasion of international criminal justice and the politics around it. The political and geographical fragmentation of Palestine, increasing control of West Bank territory, deteriorating human rights standards, increased Israeli military presence suggest that the resolution of the issue is as remote as it has been through more than a century of the occupation. In 1967, Israel occupied East Jerusalem, the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and the Golan Heights that only increased the methods of warfare and occupation. As far as the international status of Palestine is concerned, it is recognized by 193 member states of the United Nations (as of 2015). The Palestinian Declaration of Independence proclaimed the establishment of Palestinian state in exile and their claims of statehood were rendered even weaker as they were disposed of the territories they claimed. The development of international criminal law witnessed a subjugation of the Palestinian population. As for example, while the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide was being drafted in 1948, “Palestinians were ‘cleansed’ of areas of the new state of Israel”(Mark Tessler, A History of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict).  Similarly, when the war crime of transferring settlers into an occupied territory was included in the Rome Statute, Israel objected to it, arguing that it was not an offence of customary nature.

I carry Palestine in my heart, Macedonian poet Pande Manojlov who has written poems expressing his love and affection for Palestinian people told Anadolu Agency. Manojlov, who is also a writer, critic and journalist, said he tries to encourage sensitivity about the Palestinian cause by sharing his poems and writings on social network platforms.

…The suffering of the Palestinian people, who have been subjected to repeated violence of Israeli security forces, has led to calls for ending of their persecution. Worldwide campaigns have been launched to express solidarity with Palestinians.

The poem, which was also translated in Arabic, recalled the tragedy that took place in the Sabra and Shatila Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon.

“I cannot forget the mass genocide of the Palestinian people.”

Guatemala’s pro Israel vote by Atif Shamim Syed

Please TAKE ACTION RIGHT NOW and send your letter to the UN Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide and the International Criminal Court Prosecutor.
“America and Israel were both deeply involved in the genocide of the Mayans. While America provided the Guatemalan army with weapons and military hardware, Israel provided training and advice. The deadly military campaign carried out against rural indigenous peasants was devised by Israeli advisors. The Mayans who managed to survive the campaign were relocated to military-controlled villages again under the guidance of the Israelis who had already successfully crammed the displaced indigenous population of Palestine in the West Bank and Gaza.
Israeli authorities were fully aware of the intentions of their Guatemalan counterparts… This was nothing new to the Israelis because they had also been involved in a similar campaign in Palestine where the natives of the land were physically displaced and their culture stolen.”
