We’re Jewish Student Activists and We Don’t Need To Be Protected From BDS by Julia Berkman-Hill and Joshua Leifer

Kogen also makes the argument that Jews should put support for Israel before support for groups that are critical of Israel, most notably Black Lives Matter. But we cannot shirk our obligation to fight for racial justice because of objections to the words “genocide” and “apartheid.” Though we should have a conversation about those words, we must demonstrate our commitment to black and brown lives, Jewish or not. Arguing that Jews should inherently choose Israel over other issues, such as racial justice, erases the lived experience of black Jews for whom supporting and participating in Black Lives Matter is a matter of survival.

What’s more, we will not be able to participate in social justice work with our full selves until we address the injustice that our own community perpetuates. If we are silent, or perceived as silent, about the time and money our community spends justifying the destruction of Palestinian lives, why should anyone take us seriously when we say black lives matter?

Why Israel’s actions can be called genocide by Nora Barrows-Friedman

Please TAKE ACTION RIGHT NOW and send your letter to the UN Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide and the International Criminal Court Prosecutor.

Israel lobby groups recently reacted with outrage against the Movement for Black Lives policy platform which refers to US complicity in Israel’s “genocide” and “apartheid” against the Palestinian people.

Despite the outrage of many pro-Israel groups, there is a long history of human rights scholarship and legal analysis that supports the assertion Israel is committing genocide, according to a statement from the Center for Constitutional Rights“As human rights lawyers, [we felt] it might be appropriate to just clarify the record that this was nothing new – that the term genocide had been applied by human rights activists, lawyers, scholars both inside law and inside other disciplines for many, many years.”

Beyond Apartheid and Genocide—Justice for BLM and Palestine by Noura Khouri

Please TAKE ACTION RIGHT NOW and send your letter to the UN Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide and the International Criminal Court Prosecutor.

The irony should not be lost on us that the same people opposed to the use of “genocide” and “apartheid” are the same people justifying, therefore perpetuating and complicit in, the crimes in Palestine.

Similarly in the U.S., police are not held accountable and their supporters are in deep denial of the state violence and countless crimes against Black people taking place in their name. All those making justifications and denunciations, who are outraged—not at the violence itself—but at those like Colin Kaepernick and others that choose to no longer stand for symbols of this centuries-old and ongoing oppression, are too directly complicit.

When generalities are made, distinctions are muddled, and even those with the best intentions are left to interpret meanings or are completely confused by the insidious details of the system at work.

Why The Black Panther Party & Palestine Solidarity Is Still Relevant Today on Black Lives Matter Alliance of Broward

Please TAKE ACTION RIGHT NOW and send your letter to the UN Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide and the International Criminal Court Prosecutor.

After the conclusion of the Holocaust, which killed over 6 million Jewish people and displaced millions more, Jewish people wanted their own country. Britain promised Palestine as the national home for the displaced Jewish people. However, the promise was made without consulting the Christian and Muslim people who were already living in Palestine. Oh and Britain had absolutely no right to the land to even make the promise in the first place. Once Britain made this agreement in 1948, the Zionist movement worked relentlessly to carry it out. Zionism is a nationalist political movement that advocates for the re-establishment of a Jewish homeland which is defined as the historic Land of Israel (a.k.a Palestine). Proponents of Zionism view themselves as a liberation movement for Jewish people to return to their homeland, but negating that it was done at the cost of complete genocide of the Palestinians.

Black activists owe no apology for charging Israel with genocide by Darializa Avila Chevalier and Khury Petersen-Smith

Please TAKE ACTION RIGHT NOW and send your letter to the UN Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide and the International Criminal Court Prosecutor.

Though the Vision for Black Lives’ primary purpose is not to call attention to Palestine, the platform actually presents some key facts and arguments to justify its use of the terms “apartheid” and “genocide.”

For example, the vision statement notes that Palestinian homes are routinely bulldozed to make way for Israeli settlements and that Israel has more than 50 laws on its statute books that discriminate against Palestinian citizens of the state. The United Nations has defined the crime of genocide as including a deliberate policy to impose conditions of life on an ethnic, racial or religious group to bring about the group’s total or partial destruction. By seriously examining the situation, it is entirely reasonable to argue that Israel is trying to destroy the Palestinian people and is therefore committing the crime of genocide.

Jews Against Genocide stand with Movement for Black Lives, including the use of the word ‘Genocide’

Please TAKE ACTION RIGHT NOW and send your letter to the UN Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide and the International Criminal Court Prosecutor.

Much ado was made about M4BL’s use of the word ‘genocide’, referring to Israel’s systematic policies against the Palestinian people. We’d like to fully address this very serious charge as we believe it to be true, and have, ourselves, clearly stated so in the past . We clarify that the crime of genocide has a legal definition within international law, to which we strictly refer in our argument…

It is our opinion that there is more than sufficient evidence, provided by Palestinian, Israeli, and international human rights organizations, attesting to violations, on a mass scale, which constitute at least the first three acts of genocide mentioned in Article II of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

From Israeli citizens, in solidarity with the Movement for Black Lives by Boycott! Supporting the Palestinian BDS Call from Within

Please TAKE ACTION RIGHT NOW and send your letter to the UN Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide and the International Criminal Court Prosecutor.

In the struggles for liberation of both Palestinians and African Americans, we see the defenders of the unjust and oppressive status quo frame the prevailing narrative and effectively silence the demands of the liberation movements. In particular, slander and defamation has been a main tool. We reject and condemn such despicable tactics. We reaffirm our solidarity with your movement and commit to supporting it in any way we can.

The common cause of the defenders of Israel and the defenders of white supremacy exposes both of them for what they are, separately and at their intersections. We thank our opponents for making it very clear which side they are on, when it comes to justice and equality. We at Boycott from Within hold your principles and your work in the highest esteem. You can count on our continued support as you advance them. We would be proud to count ourselves among M4BL’s allies – on the side which opposes racism and oppression.

The Movement for Black Lives, the Palestinian Struggle, and a Creeping Genocide by Zeina Azzam

Please TAKE ACTION RIGHT NOW and send your letter to the UN Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide and the International Criminal Court Prosecutor.

Perhaps the most hard-hitting sentence in this section of the M4BL platform is, “The US justifies and advances the global war on terror via its alliance with Israel and is complicit in the genocide taking place against the Palestinian people.”.. Many American mainstream Jewish organizations have seized on the sobering term “genocide,” indignantly refusing to acknowledge its applicability to the Palestinian situation. Some of them ask if its use makes the platform anti-Semitic or anti-Israel. In response, others maintain that Israel’s policies toward the Palestinian population should be seen for what they are: racist, discriminatory, and destructive with the aim of destroying Palestinian culture and identity—and ultimately, large numbers of the Palestinian population.
